My truck is an '02, but the build date on the motor & the truck are both 10/01. I am wondering if my truck has PMR's? What exactly are the PMR rods made of? Does my truck have the same stock power rating as all 02's.
Yep, Motors built after 10/25/2000 have the PMR's. Your truck shoul dhave the same rating as the rest, only need to be aware that you have PMR's and if you mod you will want to keep your HP <400 RWHP to be safe or rebuild the bottom end.
Thanks for your help, but i can't find pmr in the common acronyms section. (I could be blind though). What does PMR mean, & why did ford weeken the motors by using them?
$$$$ - they are cheaper to produce and since they did not want to have to retool in the middle of a run they kept their same shape and dimisions that made them weak in certain areas. Now the 6.0's have PRM's and have no problems but they are beefier in the areas that the 7.3's have strength issues
It goes back earlier than that Alan. Witness below sticker on my heartbreaker, but I got over it. PMRs are not as good as the forged but both do break. There are a lot of PMRs in high HP/TQ motors, unfortunately as Alan pointed out, ours were not made as well as they could have been. They will still take a lot of abuse though. 400 ponies is quite a bit until you get serious.
Yep, they're on the valve covers. Mine is an 01 but my motor was built July 2000.
Proof of forged rods can be proven by removing service plug on driver's side engine block near oil filer and peeping in the hole using a mirror like I did.
Here's a link for those that are curious and would like to do what I did.
I would check them to be sure. Besides, I am curious if there are any earlier ones than mine as I seem to have the earliest PMRs that I know of on FTE. Check and let us know please.
