Im in the process of building a rock/offroad rig. its a 92 explorer. The power plant is going to be a supercharged 3.8l from a thunderbird supercoupe. d44 front and ford 9in in the rear. havent decided on gears yet.
My question is what transmission / transfer case would be a good set up or would be a working combo.
I have the stock tc from the explorer. think its a b&w 1350. I also have a b&w 1356 from a f-150. What transmission could i use to mate to either of the tc's and have the trans bolt to the 3.8. I want to go with an automatic trans.
This is a area i am fuzzy in. what works with what and waht will work if u swap this or that. does anyone have any info or input.
all tcase adapter bolt patterns are the same, for the most part. A 4x4 AOD should fit the 3.8's bell pattern, and would allow the BW case to bolt up. If your 1356 has the tcase adapter w/shifter, I'd go with that. It's beefier, and has a good low range. As with all rock crawling projects, everything breaks, eventually, and you're always adding more beef, it's an addiction.
