I have a 1992 F-150 2WD with a 5.0L engine and AOD. In the past couple of days a noise has developed that is coming from underneath the truck. I've crawled under and it appears to come from inside the bellhousing. It's a whirring sort of sound like ZZZZZZZZZZZ's. It changes with the engine rpm and occurs in every gear and when sitting still. I think it is getting louder too. I've checked all the fluids and the transmission fluid is only a few 1000 miles old. The truck runs fine, but something is wrong and causing this noise. Does anybody have any ideas?? Thanks for the help.
It does it all the time and changes with engine rpm. The only reason I think transmission is because that's where it sounds like it is coming from, the best I could from underneath the truck on a creeper.
I did notice today that after the truck sits for a few hours, the noise doesn't start until after the engine is running for a few seconds. Could it be something in the torque converter that doesn't make the noise until fluid gets to it? Just guessing.
Was the inspection cover removed to drain torque converter? If theres any kind of bend in it it could rub converter.Maybe someone turned engine over whenit was drained and bent something underthere?
Thanks for the suggestion. I took the inspection cover off and checked that everything looked ok and it did. I left the cover off and cranked the engine and the sound was still there. It is definitely coming from inside bellhousing part of the transmission. I just got back from a drive with a local transmission mechanic. He said it could be worn crankshaft bearings that has allowed the crank to shift and rub the torque converter or maybe the starter is rubbing. He said if it wasn't that it might be a pump line in the transmission and that would require a rebuild, about $700 to $900. What do you guys think? I'm going to take the starter off tomorrow and see if I can tell if it has been rubbing.
Well, this is just me, but if I just drove the truck locally, I would leave it alone. It's either going to get worse, in which case it might be easier to figure out what's up, or it will stay the same and last for years. I think you are doing the right thing in checking out the easy stuff, but pulling the tranny is major surgery and hard on the pocketbook.
I checked the starter and no such luck. Nothing appeared to be rubbing and nothing inside looked out of place. I guess it is either in the torque converter or transmission. Does anyone have any other ideas or know of where I can get a good torque converter? Thanks.
#1 I would wonder about the local tranny guy that said the crank bearings are letting the crankshaft rub the torque convertor. that is impossible since the flywheel is in the way and the flywheel is BOLTED to the crankshaft and the torque convertor is bolted to the flywheel. Think about that one for a second. :-X11
it could be that the transmission might be overfilled or the vent is plugged up.
Don't fault the transmission guy. I might have quoted him wrong. Anyway, he used a bar to pry on the harmonic balancer to see if the crankshaft moved at all and it didn't. The fluid level is fine. I think I might just drive it till it breaks or I get tired of hearing it, unless someone has any other suggestions. Thanks for all the help.
well actually it isn't that uncommon if whoever drove the vehicle before and how they treated the transmission. when the transmission is moving the vehicle there is alot of hydraulic pressure built up in there and as we all know things can breakdown over time
