i was told today that the new 6.4 engine has been tested MUCH MUCH more than the 6.0's. the group of trucks that they are using have logged over 10 million hours on them whith no problems at all. i was told that they have been testing these trucks over a year now in real world enviroments running them all day everyday. This is very encouraging news (if its true) to me. The 6.0 was hyped up the same way and it has left something to be desired. I dont think ford can afford another disaster that was the 6.0. Dont get me wrong i love these trucks...I mean really...i love the smell, the racket that it makes on a cold morning is sweeter than beethoven's 9th...i may need therapy.
Another thing to consider is that the 6.4 is going to be used from the git go in International medium duty trucks and buses as well, with the 6.0 it was basically Ford's baby to work out the bugs as International continued to use the 7.3/T444E in most applications for over one year before also going to the 6.0/VT365.
Wonderful, as long as you never shut it off. These turbos seem to have as many problems from sitting as from use. I want to see the one that's tested by starting and running for 10 miles once every two weeks. That's an area the current ones need improvement in.
Why would you buy a $45K truck that you only put 260 miles a year on? Or, From another perspective, it would take you 385 years just to drive as many miles as the engine warranty!
BTW I am being facetious, I probably understand your driving situation, just poking fun at your literal comment, in jest of Delfino, TX computations.
the rumor is very true. ford personnell has been driving these trucks for a while. i was in a meeting with the diesel head man saturday. they know the 6.0was bad, he admitted it. he also said that if a problem arises, they will push the release date up because they want this to be a good product. i believe ford has learned a thing or two within the 6.0
np jfralph. I welcome all views. For me it's a seasonal thing. It doesn't get as much use in the summer. But what about when it sits on a dealer lot for months prior to sale or you go on vacation or it's in the shop? Not many miles are going to be put on it, but time ticks on. I'm just saying that was one of the 6.0's weak points. Not only how many hours they run, but thermal cycles and storage time cause problems too. No reason it need be on the 6.4 if they did it right. I'd be more impressed by thermal cycling tests than how long it can run. I don't think parts wearing from mileage had a lot to do with most of the 6.0 problems or maybe I'm wrong. Just one point of view.
on second thought 10million hours is a little much...i guess i was just to excited about it and it didnt jump out at me as being unrealistic. that is what i was told though. im sure they have tested it a great deal. 10 million hours....lol

Diesels are not meant to do that, they are made to run and work hard not drive 10 miles and shut off!
