explorer problems

I have a 1992 Explorer, I problem is that the check engine light comes on after driving about 3 miles. The gas mileage has also gone to about 10 miles per gallon. I've had it to a few shops. So far I've replaced the O2 sensor, catalytic converter, and the powertrain computer. Everthing has had no change... HELP

Have you had the codes pulled? There may be a code even if the CEL is out.

Get you codes read. the CEL comes on to tell you - go get the codes read. You could have a host of issues from dirty/bad MAF sensor, one of the temp sensors, a bad fuel pressure regulator...replacing the PCM was not the right thing to do without running through all the codes first and analyzing the data. PCM's can go bad but not very often.

I,ve had it to two garages, and the to the dealer. I am getting tired of having things changed and not fixing the problem. I would of thought that an engine light would be easy to fix... the gas mileage has also gone bad.

I don't think we can provide much advice unless you can tell us what the codes are.

Codes 171, 172 and 173 for pre-1996 vehicles with the OBD I diagnostic system are "HO2S11 lack of switching, Bank 1", where HO2S stands for "Heated Oxygen Sensor". I'm not sure what all this means, but according to this website - http://autotechrepair.suite101.com/a...r_flow_sensors - you probably have a bad mass air flow sensor.

This site also describes a way to repair the sensor rather than replacing it (about 3/4 of the way down the page). If you're gonna replace it anyway, might as well give this a try.

Good Luck!!

have you pulled a cple of plugs to check the burning of fuel?
is the tail pipe black?

I would be leaning towards testing the fuel pressure.

I have now have changed the o2 sensor, had fuel rails cleaned, replaced the catalyic converter, powertrain control module, and the mass air flow sensors the check engine light still comes on after driving about three miles. The code I'm told is a 173. I plan to have it checked again to see if perhaps a different code shows up... I'm getting tired of replaceing compnents with no change, any ideas... at this point I don't know what to try...

I'm banking on a vacuum leak.. or possibly a bad ground for the O2 sensor.. which engine do you have?
