I recentlly acquired a 1995 f-150 4x4 with the 5 speed trans---the 4x4 shifter is seized solid--- 4x4 light is on on the dash but I am sure it is not in 4by---has anyone had this problem, and if so what do I do?? Anything I shouldn't do would be really helpful also!! ( This is my fourth FORD F-150,but my first 4x4 ).
Thanks in advance!!
Gary
When I first got mine, it just would go into 4H and back. No sideways movement to shift it to neutral and farther back. I used a can of liquid wrench over about a week or so on the linkage and a lot of patient jiggling. Works fine now. Don't force anything and you'll save a bunch of disassembly/repairs. Remember, you'll have to pull the shifter to the left before you go back into 4L.

not on a 1995 you push down then back, my shifter would'nt go in to 4L took some PBlaster and spraid it on the and taped it with a hamer and worked it back and forth worked fine ever since filed the boot up with grese put it back on
If it's seized hard you will probably have to disassemble the linkage, libricate and put it back together. The problem is the main bolt fastening the shift lever itself directly below the opening in the floor.
take it out, and free it up. i've fixed dozons of these. everyone yanks on them, and breaks the alum. casting.... don't force it, what ever you do. i don't know if they all have them, but some have a factory grease fitting on them
How are you trying to shift it? just sitting still or what? sometimes if they wont shift, its just because of binding in the case. If you let the truck roll SLOW, and try it somtimes it helps out. if it doesnt, soak all the linkages in pb blaster.
Disassembly and grease works. The case piece should never have been made of aluminum. The boot should be replaced if torn. A grease fitting would be a great idea. I would look and see if there's room to put one in while it's apart.
