I towed my 27 foot Ultralite camper (3900 lbs empty) with my 2002 f150 w/4.2 v6. On flat ground it did quite well, able to pull at 70 fairly easily. on the slightest hill it downshifted and once on a 7% grade it shifted back to 2nd and ran about 4000 rpms. This was not comfortable for me so i upgraded to a 5.4 . BTW, the 2002 had 3.55 gears.
