Check your load ranges on the tires. The LT are rated for higher weights and will ride stiffer because of it. Passenger tires will be fine for towing or wheeling provided that you are not overloading the tire.
"P-Rated tires are less money but if you are running in Gravel you are going to be prone to Flats. If you tow any substantial weight then a Light-Truck class tire is in order"
In the last 20 yrs I have lived on THIS gravel rd, I haven't ever seen anyone with a flat tire. Not on a passenger vehicle or an SUV with under rated P Metric tires on it.
How often does this happen???
Ford recalled my tires with 50k on them. They replaced them with Continental Contitrac's and I now have put 117k on those tires with lots of tread left. I have never had a tire go as long as these. 17" stock wheels. I am seriously considering another set of the Contitrac's next year.
I bought a set of ContiTrac SUV's to replace the tires that Ford put on my '01 after the recall. I never like the way the 265/70R17 looked on that model and they wore unevenly pretty quick. So when a set of OEM 275/60/R17's went on sale at Wal-mart I got them. I put about 40K miles on those before I traded the car in and they still looked good as new. There was little if any tire wear. Now the ContiCraps that came on my '06 are a completely different story. Those got replaced after 12K miles with a set of Michelin's. Worst tire ever.
Any recommendations on size or type?
Will a larger tire fit the original rims & the truck?
I noticed that Cooper's website shows both a P265/70R17 & a LT265/70R17 under the Discoverer ATR. Anyone know the difference?
The "P" designation indicates a Passenger Vehicle tire. The "LT" represents a Light Truck tire. If your stock size is 265/70 then I'm assuming you have 4WD so I'd go with the LT.
The 2WD XP's came with 275/60's which yields about a 29.9921 inch tall tire. The 4WD is a 31.6062 inch tall tire sooo I would assume you can fit pretty much any 31" tall tire and as far as width goes, I'm not sure. The stocker runs 265mm wide so.....
265 millimeters = 10.4330709 inch
any 31x10.50 should work and I would assume you can go a little bit bigger but an in-between size like that would be hard to find.
Point of the story is.....I always told myself if I had a 4WD XP and didn't feel like shelling out for a Suspension Lift that I would do a 3" Body Lift and 33" All-Terrains or Mud-Terrains (BFG).
