No 471 for me, plenty of 653, 671, 871 and 892 trucks though in the Detroit linup.
237 Macks.
200, 220, 250, 335, 350, 400 and 600 in the Cummins lineup.
3208, 3406 Cats
Pretty much the same line up for me. I only remember seeing a couple on the road running 471's. But I traded for one here while back and finally got around to go look at it and the truck runs good and the body is super straight and no rust. I am thinking about putting everything on some late moder suspension and drivetrain and 5x4 that I already have and make a 5th wheel puller, wandering if I will be satified with the power of the 4 banger.
Must slam finger in door before driving any Detroit smaller than the 892 if you want to get anywhere.
With how long it takes me to heal now, I think Detroit's are out of the question for me.
Detroit rule #2,
You can't hear anything, inside or outside the truck, even if it has been shut down.
Wonder why me ears are still ringing?
I drove a 671 with a 5x4 a couple years ago, just to show the Road Ranger big motor kids how it was done in the old days.
Sad thing, they could not get it to pull.
I told them you can't drive a 671 Detroit like you drive a 3406, RPM against the govenor and screaming is the only way they run.
They laughed at me until, I was keeping you with a 3406 13 speed in and out of the pit.
If you can drive them, a 5x4 is about as good as it gets off road in my opinion.
As long as it has been since I drove a 5x4, I was surprised at how fast it came back to me.
5 gears in 30 feet never going below 1800 RPM.
LOL the last time I made a round (over the road) with a 5x4 I found out how spoiled and lazy I have gotten.
I have saved this set of boxes for several years thinking I would put them in a toy of some sort I'm thinking it would make a unique toy that would handle a 5th wheel pretty good if I gear it right.
Thats why I have been thinking about going with a ZF5 and keeping my GV.
I really think the GV would not handle the day to day use in your truck though a brownie would you would only have to shift it when you needed the extra gears too.
there is a buy over on OB who is running a brownie 4 behind a t19....I would love to go that route and then swap to a 4.56....so now my question (completely off topic, and not meant as a hi-jack), if I do a 4x conversion can I get 4.56's for an IFS d44?
(it would never see any real off-roading, just the occasional muddy hill side road at the ranch or snowy vacation)
3.07 are bound to be available somewhere they came stock in chevys.
I never could figgure out why but chevys 5.7 diesels all had either 3.07 or 3.08 (can't remember which) the under powered motor never had a chance with those gears.
