Unhappy 86 ranger 2.3 owner. Engine starts fine, but after driving sputters and stalls out when ideling. Engine test produced codes 21, 22, 31, and 82. Parts replaced are:
New gas tank, both fuel pumps replaced, fuel injectors, fuel filter and has 40lb pressure in fuel line. Starter and coil are new, heat sensor--oil pressure and heat sensor to block, map sensor, bypassed inertia switch, knock sensor and new distributor. Some trouble with the timing but starts.
DOn't know the codes -- others here do, but some other questions
1. What's " some trouble with the timing?"
2. How about the pressure regulator? For injected systems, you really need to do a fuel volume test (carefully!), and I think that a leaky regulator could screw you up.
3. Did you get a new ignition module when you did the distributor? -- or are you sure that the old one is good. They have had heat issues.
sounds like some trouble with timing maybe. you might wanna try and get that fixed first. sputtering stalling can all be cause by off timing. if you know the timing is off or you're having issues with it i'd correct that problem first. then see if the sputtering and stalling continues. good luck
The SPOUT jumper needs to be removed when setting the timing. Otherwise, you will have an engine that is responsive only in the hi rpm ranges. Gutless, to say the least. Or, you can put it into 'fixed timing' mode by using a code reader.
Have you cleaned the IAC over by the air cleaner box?

I agree 100%, if you have timing issues they need to be addressed first, timing will GREATLY effect runability. If that doesn't fix the problem, next time it dies, while it's refusing to start, check for both spark and injector signal. The TFI module has a tendency to act exactly as you describe, and one telltale sign that the TFI is dead is that there is no signal for ignition or injectors. I'm not saying you should go out and buy a TFI, but they are failure prone and failure symptoms commonly match your description. Just a thought...
