Hi all I recently purchased a 54 F8 dump with the 317 and 5 speed tranny. Trans has some issues. Am curious as to whether this would be a trans worth fixing or should I go for the 4 speed which I actually would prefer. Keeping in mind this is going to be a hard working truck, any suggestions and/or help would be greatly appreciated. Will post pics when I get it figured out... thanks again.
Well if your going to use the truck hard I would stay with the 5 speed.
A 4 spd will fit in but your going to have to modify the drive shaft. 5spds
give you another lower gear to move a heavy load. I have a 57 F600 wrecker
with a 5spd and single speed rear, it would be worthless with a 4spd as the gear splits would be too great between 3rd & 4th . My next project is a 2spd rear.
If you have a 2 spd rear then it would'nt be too bad. Later model 5 spds will
fit in your truck, they are not a hard trans to repair. This is just my opinion.
So good luck with your truck, whatever you decide.
Hotwrench- Thanx for the input... I do indeed have a 2spd rear. The 52 F8 dump I bought but haven't brought home yet has a 4spd in it. Thought it might be an easy swap but the extra low gear might come in quite handy around here as there are very few miles of flat and level roads. Mostly hills. Thank-you again and I will post pics soon... HAPPY MOTORING TO ALL!!!
I thought the difference between the 4 and 5 speeds was high gear, not low gear. I'm pretty sure 5th is an overdrive, and 4th in both tranny's is 1:1.
There is a 5 speed overdrive - but most of these old trucks used a 5 speed with a 1 to 1 high gear ratio. This gives you two gears between 2 and high for climbing grades.
