I Have an 02 with an automatic. When going down a steep mountain road, I manually put the trans into 1st gear. When my speed got up to about 15 MPH, the torque converter either disengaged, or the trans shifted up. Truck started picking up speed, & RPM went down. Any info would be appreciated
I have the same problem with my 2001 F-350. After several tranny shops, I finally got a hold of the tranny guy at the local stealership, and he said that there is a snap ring that commonly falls off. His advice-live with it and go through more brakes than usual or rebuild it.
If you have a stock set up without a mod for manual control of the torque converter clutch (TCC) and manually select 1st gear, the coast clutch (CC) is engaged, the TCC never engages, and the TC will slip some but you should get engine breaking. If speed increases, so should RPM, reaching about 3200 RPM at 30 mph. It sounds like your CC is disengaging which allows the tranny to free wheel, and the RPM to drop back to idle.
THAT'S IT!!! The tranny tech said that it was the snap ring on the coast clutch. It was just too late last night to remember everything. He did say that it was a common happening though.
Anybody know how bad it is to put the snap ring back in place? Oh how i wish i had engine brakeing again..............
umm i can tell you after watching brian build my trans you have to disassemple the trans so much you might *** well have it rebuilt sorry for the bad news

Once the trans is out and torn down it's really easy to do. The bad part is that if you don't replace the drum with one that has the snap ring groove properly machined the snap ring will just pop right out again.
