The better mount position is pre-turbo. The probe will respond quicker to temp changes, so you can more accurately see what the engine is doing. Also the turbo itself absorbs a lot of heat, and that rate of heat absorbtion can vary widely depending on ambient temps, speed, mods, etc. Pre-turbo temps are consistently accurate in almost any case, where the post turbo readings can vary by hundreds of degrees.

A user a while back posted results of both pre and post temps that were taken at the same time. He found that you could be over the "redline" in pyro temps, and never know it if the probe was post-turbo. The response at those critical temps didn't register.

Almost forgot, you can drill and tap the manifold, or clamp to the turbo up pipe just past the manifold. Take your pick.

You have to drill either the manifold or up-pipe, depending on where you want to mount it. The manifold is a drill and tap, and the up-pipe is a drill and clamp. Going with the clamp is much quicker and easier, but if that probe doesn't seat correctly, you have to purchase new up-pipes because it will leak at the probe. Mine is in the up-pipe without a problem. I just made sure that when I drilled, the probe barely fit in the hole. Also make sure that the ceramic washer doesn't crack or crush, it's very delicate.

As far as shavings, just use a magnet to try and fish out what you can, the rest will blow out when you crank the truck. Let it idle for a minute and the exhaust gasses will push the shavings past the turbo, and it won't harm anything.
