My 2000 Ranger suddenly developed a very high idle problem. It is so bad that it cant be safely driven. Not to mention the fact I fear tearing up the clutch or even doing engine damage on these cold mornings. I dont have a tach but to give you an idea, if you are going down the road in 5th gear, it will do 70 mph by itself. So far no check engine light. I have thorougly cleaned the throttle body and replaced the throttle postion sensor. For the heck of it I even unplugged the IAC just to see what would happen. Nothing changed! Anybody have any thoughts on this? Please help!
The cable is working as smooth as can be. I will try taking the tube off tomorrow and see what the butterfly is doing while its running. Not equipped with cruise so that is eliminated. Thanks
I just checked all the vacuum lines and could find nothing wrong. The throttle body is completely closed and stays closed even when its running. Could it be the IAC is bad? $110 for a new one! Ouch! Should I replace it or just take it somewhere?
check for vacuum leaks with something like brake clean or even wd40, when you find one the idle will change. Most common problem with high idle is unmetered air ie vacuum leak.
one place I have seen it escape notice is the brake booster, plug or pinch off the vacuum hose to the booster and see if it changes the idle any.
IAC is Idle Air Control. There's a good tech artice linked from right under this website's top menu setup that applies pretty well in a general sense to most Ford trucks. There are other articles around the web, too.
