Relocating dipstick bung

Just completed installing Sanderson headers on my 360 FE that is in my 53 F100. Since I had to install the Canton rear sump oil pan to clear the TCI Mustang 2 crossmember, the problem I now have is the collector for the header hits the bung for the dip stick tube. So for the time being I plugged the bung with a 1/4 allen plug. The only way I can now read the oil level is with the original dip stick, but it is not accurate because it reads the low part of the pan. Any suggestions without removing the headers and oil pan and welding a new bung in a new location. Since I change the oil monthly and it does not leak (it now takes 7 quarts) I can assume its always full and clean. By the way can anyone tell me why I cant include photo attachements? Thanks

as for the photo attachments, i believe that comes with the paid membership... cheapskates like me just post em up in our gallery... lol you could always use a 2wd dipstick and go through the block by the oil filter? or is that the location you mean by the 'original dip stick'? I run all 4x4 FE's so maybe someone else will have a better solution than this one?

The original dipstick is a 2wd dipstick that goes thru the block, although with the new pan the large sump is now in the rear. So my reading from the original dipstick is now hitting the small sump in the front.

Well if you know your canton holds 8qts full in the pan.....Just mark that level on the stick that reads from the shallow end..and when "if it drops below that level marked on the shallow dip stick..then you know to add, and when its on the mark your full.. Unless it doesnt show any oil in the shallow end?

I need to find out "IF" any of the guys are running Cantons Front sump T-pans on there 67 to 72 trucks..as thats what I want to run on the 422" build..I dont know at 12 1/2"s wide..If it will clear the crossmember? Its cold out and I dont want to have to go measure it!! LOL..I'll stay on the warm side of the wall..LOL

I tried to measure up my truck for the stock Cobra T pan, and it was a no go. Can't recall any measurements since it was like 10+ yrs ago.
I'd bet that anymore than 1" to the side would get you in trouble? Unless it was tapered UP at an angle to clear the crossmember. Don't hold me to this...I'm going by CRS memory LOL!!

Well from what I see is..front to rear clearence no problem..clearing the crossmember at the bottom of the pan to the top of the member no problem..But at 12 1/2 " wide..I think it will clear the side of the brossmember on the drivers side..but with the 2 1/2" offset of the motor I dont think it will clear the pass. side? So much for that!!

Posted clear pics of the headers and the Canton rear sump pan in my photo gallery. If anybody has an idea as to where I can relocate the bung for the dipstick, without removing the pan, let me know. Otherwise I have to drop it all to remove the pan.

Innovative,

I have a similar challenge with my 55 Ford (390 and Canton pan). A Canton rep told me to order their dipstick ($100) and plug the dip stick hole in the block. I would prefer not to plug the hole and use a stock dip stick. How did you resolve this issue??

Thanks, Lance

Dave as long as there is a sign of oil on the stick when inserted in the front location you will be fine. Push the stick in till it bottoms out and measure the difference from normal seating. Use a pair of snips to cut the end off at this distance. Lay the old end next to the fresh cut end and scribe the old data onto the new blank stick. Use a bench grinder to round and remove about another .125" from the tip and walla a correct length stick that reads as it should.

BOL.. Or.. pull at that crap apart and do it the hard way
