I have an unexplainable squealing coming from the front of the motor, its a 3.0, used belt dressing for a few days it worked but had to use it every morning, now belt dressing doesnt stop it, changed idler pulley, didnt help, tensioer pulley seems good, what else could this be?
Take a long screwdrier and CAREFULLY touch near each of the pulleys, see if you can see which one is making the noise. Sounds like a regular old bearing going bad in one of them. Stop using belt dressing, it's a band aid and not real good for the belt. How is the belt's condition anyways?
change the tensioner and the belt and your noise will leave. 99 i'd say ur close to 100,000 miles or over. I'd bet my right arm on the tensioner. good luck. oh just because it has good tension on the belt doesn't mean it's not bad. it has a bearing inside it. the bearing is most likely shot.
The pulley still seems kinda tight, doesnt move, the belt dont look too bad, but belt dressing didnt help, so I kinda ruled out the belt, my truck has 127,000 miles on it
ok the tensioner won't show any real signs and i can tell you for a fact that if your truck has 127,000 miles on it and the tensioner hasn't been replaced it's bad. these things only have a life of about 90 to 100 k you're lucky it lasted this long. you can keep trying to find stuff but i've seen this to many times to think that it's anything else. change the tensioner and the belt you can thank me after you've done this.
just change the whole thing one bolt and the tensioner will come right off. take the belt off so there's no tension on the tensioner. then take the tensioner off. put the new one on and then the new belt. it should take you all of and hour to take the old one off and the new one on.
I replaced the tensioner, still makes the noise, I think it ma be coming from the AC compressor, can I take off the compressor and get a belt for it without AC
but if it was the belt, could'nt that be checked by spraying a little belt dressing on it, I know I was told not to use it, but I figured I could check to see if it was the belt by doing this, is there any reason why it would'nt work but a new belt would?
I have a 2002 3.0 and went through the same thing. My truck is a manual, but it turns out the throwout bearing was actually making that noise. Driving me nuts.
Go back to RangerPilot's reply, he's on the right track. Papa's 64, don't you feel the least bit bad that you are insisting this guy's problem is the tensioner, without knowing that you're correct? Take the time to isolate the noise (using a screwdriver to your ear, or an automotive stethascope), the belt may be at the top of the list even though the dressing isn't quieting it anymore. Do you know how long/how many miles it has been since this belt was replaced? If not, it's probably due to be replaced, and if it's original I'd definitly suggest you replace it anyway simply for security's sake. Another way to check components for a dry/failing bearing is to check for excessive heat buildup after normal run-times, a bad bearing will get very hot rather quickly, more-so than a good bearing. Just a couple suggestions.
It's your camshaft sensor synchronizer.. mounted on the rear of the engine where the distributor used to go. The bearing goes bad, gets hot, and makes a squealing noise JUST LIKE a belt.
Remove the belt and run it for a few seconds.. if the noise is still present then it is definately the synchronizer.
Make sure you mark its position VERY WELL, as well as the position of the "rotor", if it is off even by a couple degrees it screws up the injector timing and can set a check engine light and driveability problems.
Bsmitty no i don't feel bad because i've seen this at least 3o times in the past 2 years a not all but about 25 or more were the tensioner and belt. and if that doesn't do the trick then yes i'm sorry but it was time to change it anyway before it does go bad. i still think a new belt will do the trick now. of course i've been wrong once before. but seriously maybe i should say hey check it like this but liek i said i've seen it to many time to think it was anything else. whatever it is i hope it works out for shane in the long run. good luck
