well this morning i was wanting to start my truck and it wouldnt start. It would just crank like normal and then the cranking would slow down. Its not the batteries because i just had them checked and they are fine. The glow plug relay feels warm so does that mean that its working? Could it be the glow plugs even though i just had them replaced a year ago? My truck is a 96 f250 PSD
Next cold start use a short the 2 big terminals on the GPR togther for ~30-60 seconds. Get in the cab and see if it starts better. If it does the GPR is likely shot. The GPR can get very warm and not be working correctly.
How long are you cranking before it slows down? IF it slows within 2-3 minutes of cranking the batteries are getting weak. These engines need all the battery you can give them to get going in the cold weather.
Get some sandpaper and clean all the terminal end connections on the GPR, the slightest bit of chalky residue on them (as with mine two years in a row) does not let the glowplugs cycle properly. I used dielectric grease on them this time hoping it will solve the problem.
what do you mean use a short on the 2 big terminals?
Touch the 2 big terminals on the GPR with a screwdriver. Grammer and typing atre not my strong suit.
If your batteries are losing power within 5 cecounds, you need new batteries or the starter is going bad. Clean the connections at the starter solenoid (passenger fender) and on the starter anlong with the battery terminals!
BTW: The batteries must be checked individually. They cannot be connected together during the test.
hey JDM try putting a test light on the large terminals on the glow plug relay. There 2 small terminals and two large ones. One of the large terminals is always hot, but the other only energizes upon start-up for up to 2 minutes temperature permitting. Prop the test light on the one that is not hot and turn the key forward but don't engage the starter and watch the light. If it comes on and stays on 1-2 minutes you're relay is fine.
Also as far as your batterys go feel your starter/ battery wires after trying to start and see if it getting too hot indicating a short in it. Hope this helps.

i did get my batteries tested individually, and tested fine. but i never thought of cleaning the stater solenoid connections. i will do that first thing in the morning.
sorry if im asking too many questions. Im just trying to figure this out on my own. I dont want to send it to ford and get billed $500 dollars when i can to it myself
yes a wire brush will work... just make sure the starter and glow plug relay terminals are clean. also check to see what shape the crimped on terminals are in, i have seen where they are corroded in the crimp and cause a point of high resistance causing huge current draws. as the guys here have said use a test light on the terminals of the glow plug relay to see if gets power when you turn the key on.
Did the wait to start light come on? If not check fuse 22 its the fuel heater on filter housing. If its blown unplug heater element top plug under fuel pressure reg. It will run with heater unplugged.
well i cleaned all of the terminals but still no luck. I noticed that with all that cranking, i dont not get any smoke coming out the tail pipes. at all
