I have a 2001 4.6. The truck seems to idle fine, but when driving down the road it will start to jerk when under a load. I just had the fuel injectors cleaned, new fuel filter, transmission input shaft replaced (weld broke). This jerk started before all the work, so I had brought it into the shop have them work on it, and the shop did the 60,000 mile service. A couple thousand miles the weld broke on the input shaft, transmission work was done at a ford garage. The problem is still jerking with no check engine light. I also notice that the fuel gauge would move up and down from ¾ to ½. On heavy accelerations the tack with go down and loose power, then pick up and go. Is this a fuel pump problem?
I know it may sound far fetched, but have your alternator and battery tested under load. If the alternator is not supplying the correct power output, then the computer will not operate correctly. A bad abttery could also cause a bad draw making the alternator change its output.
I have not checked the battery or the output of the alternator. Wouldn't I see the lights dim when driving at night?
Is a test with a voltmeter a correct way to check the output and battery? Or should I invest in another tool?
the first think most shops do when you have a miss under load is put new spark plugs in the motor. normally this is more in the 80-100,000 mile catagory, but 60,000 could be a problem.
Should I replace the spark plugs? I've read that replacment of the plugs are not easy. If that is the place to start, what are the best plugs to put in?
well that would be the easiest and cheapest way and place to start. If you think its a miss.
just buy the $1.29 plugs.
but it could be a lot of things. bad wire? resistance on a wire should be 30-70K. But usually they will misfire at idle not high rpm. could be a bad plug though, it does happen and its random.
