Hesitation not good?

Hesitation not good?
1996 F150 straight 6, std. transmission with +180,000 miles, kept tuned up.
Two months ago it started to hesitate or jerk “once” in a while driving. Similar to when having; not notice fuel levels and having to switch tanks on the move. Then yesterday it did not start until I switched tanks, then it jerked twice while driving to the store. But that was it until this morning. Similar issue, would not start until switching back to the other tank. This is going to be painful isn’t it?
