Hello all. New forum member here. I have an '01 F-150 4.2 v6. The Check Engine Soon light was on so I had it diagnosed at Autozone. The guy told me the MAF needs to be replaced. Anyone done this? Is it difficult? Anything special I should know about before doing this? I appreciate the help. Lots of good information here.
There is an indepth article on this site on exactly how to do this, but since the search function isn't available...
Your truck must be off for several hours. The MAF has a hotwire that must be cold.
You must disconnect your negative cable from your battery during your dissassembly (for at least 15mins). This will reset your computer so that it can create new data tables for your air mixture/engine load with the newly cleaned MAF.
Using a MAF specific cleaner is best. Throttle body/ carberator cleaners can leave residue that affects performance of the MAF, or actually cause damage to the sensor. There may be safe ones that others could suggest.
Make no contact with the sensor wires with any object. They are very delicate like a lightbulb filament.
After removing the MAF from your truck, spray the filament wires liberally with cleaner then use compressed air to dry it completely. Reassemble and it should be good as new.

First off, NEVER let the idiots at AutoZone diagnose your vehicle. Just get the code read, write it (them) down, and come back here.
Need the actual code. MAF cailures are not common.
There is no need to let a MAF sit for hours before cleaning. The hot wire element cools back to ambient in a matter of a few seconds. Brake parts cleaner works very well. No residue.
There is no need to disconnct the battery cable. Just remove the single fuse that supplies PCM KAM power while you're messing around. 10-15 minutes is fine.
After all this, we'll likely find you've got a vacuum leak and the monkey at AZ wasted all our time....
Thanks for the advice. I'll didn't get the codes but I'll go back, get the codes and post them. I reset the computer and the code has not come back on yet. Should I expect it to come back if the problem persists?
I let my tank run to almost empty and filled up with good super unleaded and added a fuel cleaner. Replaced the air filter and made sure the gas cap is secured. If the code does not come back would you say it's fixed? Thanks again!
