Stepside? Fleetside? Can't Decide!
Question, are you deliberately using Brand X designations (fleetside & stepside) or are you using them because you just don't know the correct FoMoCo designations? (styleside & flareside)
I can’t believe you seriously think anyone would care about the distinction you’ve made in the context of this thread. I’m more apt to believe that you simply see it as an opportunity to publicly ridicule me.
While I created this thread to share any learnings I developed during this phase of the project and to solicit useful input from the membership that may help me in this portion of the truck, let me assure you that I certainly do not need or want any input from yourself on this or anything else.
I was just being curious w/ ridicule not even anywhere on the horizon & if I was going to ridicule you, my post would have been worded a great deal differently than it was & would have been rather obvious.
Try giving someone the Benefit of Doubt upon occasion you might like it.
Some believe them to be interchangable or don't know the difference & there is, as they are a Regestered Trade Marks w/ each company @ the time of their introduction.
And seen as how it's dealing w/ what some consider to be Butchering a perfectly good truck, unless you started out w/ something that was extremely rusted out body wise, the only thing you'd get out of me is what I started out w/ in the first place in that post, "To each his own I believe.
"
I've thought about the PT Cruiser taillights before. That's what the wife drives, so it won't be hard to scope out when the time comes. I've always liked the late model Corvette taillights as well - C5 I think it's called. The Chevy cobalt has interesting taillights as well. Just about every car that goes by gets the once over for potential contributions....
Fat,
Thanks for the tip. Either this weekend or next I'm off to a spot near Toronto to pick up a couple of used rear fenders. He says he has at least one old tailgate that has the script as well. No idea of price yet. What I really want is the V8 script though - think it was used on late 30's/early 40's tailgates...

I know what you mean, every car that I see I give the once over for parts I can use.
Right now I'm in the process of refitting a set of tailights from a 1946 Chrysler Town and Country to fit my rear fenders. I have already removed a small reflector from the housings and replaced them with blue dots and started to sand them down to fit the curvature of my fenders.
I always liked the look of the sequential turn signals of the late 60's early 70's Cougars.
From what I've seen of your work, I'm sure that what ever you decide on will look fantastic

are doing some real creative things with them. I just put a strip one on my tire trailer that comes on 1/2 as taillights, full as brake, and each end flashes for turns.
Some have an extra thick lens so you can sand it flush with the opening in the panel and shoot a light coat of paint over it for real stealth look, can't see it until the lights come on.
Flush mount certainly enables a subtle result.....
Need a few measurements from someone with a stock 53-56 bed and fenders;
1. ground to center of bolt that joins front fender to running board.
2. ground to center of bolt that joins rear fender to running board.
3. any difference on the rear bolts inner versus outer?
4. distance from ground to bottom of front of rear fender at the side where the wheel opening is
5. distance from ground to bottom of rear of rear fender at the side where the wheel opening is.
also -
distance from the bottom of the rubber seal on the rear window to the top of the back wall of the bed.
Thanks,
I think the measuremtnts you are asking for is going to be different for every truck due to tire/wheel combos, rake of the truck, etc.
Is there a point on the frame that can be measured from?
I can't wait to see the finished bed
Bobby
