Should a person always have a block honed and decked prior to rebuilding?
Are there any other things I'm forgetting, besides porting the heads? .
I have found a machine shop here locally (CO. Springs) who have employees (older ones) who know Y-blocks, and I just don't want to sound like a total Idiot when I go in there.:-X11
Proper finish in the cylinders is far more imoportant than porting the heads. Decking is nice as it give you a nice sealing surface for the head gaskets.
Thanks,
I took a look at the cylinder walls and they look pretty darn good, the crankshaft is another matter alltogether, the connecting rod bearings are showing copper on the high side. I'll take crank to the machine shop and have 'em mic it I guess.
Take the block to the machine shop and have them mic the cylinders to see if you can hone them, if the cylinders are worn then have them bore the block no more than .030 if possible, also have them mic the crank and if it checks out ok then be sure to plastigage your rod and main bearings.
