reverse goes out
I have A 98 explorer sport and the reverse goes out. When you put it in drive it drive fine until you stop and put it in first, then you have to manualy shift it. Put in a new torque converter and the pump pumps really good also put a new filter in it. If we stop for about fifteen minutes it fine until you put it in reverse then it starts all over again.

Did you check the fluid level? When my modulator was leaking, it would behave similarly because the fluid level would go down. Is there any wet in any of the vacuum lines on the vacuum tree?

the 98 has the 5r55e transmission, electronic shift, therefore no modulator valve.
check the wires and connections on the PRNDL switch on the driver side of transmission, some get dirty and then temperature sensitive.
