As far as the speedo being off.. does it have stock rear end? stock tire sizes? You can have the speedo reprogrammed with ford scan equipment by putting in the gear ratios and tire size..
stock rear, stock tire size. speedo use to work properly. To my knowledge truck has 4whee ABS. Will have to verify. Curious why Ford Dealership did not mention reprogramming of speedo ...?
I'm not 100% positive you can on a 99. Mine is a 2000 and I reprogrammed it myself (when I worked at a Ford dealer) when I upped my tire size from 225/70R15 to 235/75R15 so my speedo would stay accurate.
They might have tried to reprogram it, and some internal software failure (of the cluster/module) might have caused some kind of error... OR maybe you got the part-time guy who doesn't really know what he's doing
Did they explain WHY they want to replace the cluster?
They only indicated the two codes, one being the rear diff sensor which they replaced. I was told they tested it and it still did not register the correct speed. The next thing they wanted was to replace speedo (2nd code) but the truck had to sit while they had a new one set to the same mileage as the current odometer. I could not have the truck down for a week. I felt at this point they were guessing and it was costing too much.
Both the 86 that I had from brand new and my 2000 I got this year were off by 5 MPH. The 86 was stock and as far as I can tell the 00 hasn't had any changes. Helps keep me from speeding too much.
Thanks ValkyrieVixen...if the speedo from you 86 was off when brand spank"n new...did you have it fixed while under warranty? What was the reason for discrepancy? 5 mph is acceptable...this puppy is from 10 -15 depending on the vehicle speed. Not a problem on the open highway, just go with the flow of traffic. A major concern is the odometer is adding more mileage to the truck that what it actually has driven.
It was never a big enough deal to bother with, just left it that way.
Yours sounds like more of a pain and probably computer related.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
I believe your correct on both counts... a pain and computer related. I am glad that my other truck, a 1987 V-2500 HD, Sierra Classic GMC 4x4, 33-12.5x15.5 BFGoodrich Mudders, TBI 350, PT 3:53, 4-speed Muncy w/creeper, SS 3" dual Flowmaster 50's has a mechanic speedo. thanks for replying...
