Am having an issue with my 03 B2300 with 2.3 and auto trans. If you go into drive or switch from drive to reverse there is a delay of a few secounds before it engages. Yesterday I pulled into a drive to turn around with a downward incline and it actually rolled forward after putting it into reverse before it engaged and backed up. Is this a common issue and what are the causes and corrections to get rid of it? Is this normal for this tranny or something that will cause further problems down the road ? I want to have information before approaching the dealer.
I'm no transmission expert, but have you checked your transmission fluid? If the level is low,it may have issues changing gears. It's something to check that is a simple fix if it turns out to be the problem.
Ford/Mazda had a recall awhile back to add an additive to the fluid to prevent a brass bushing in the solenoid from swelling (due to the old Mercon V fluid design, which has since been reformulated to prevent this), however once symptoms develop, this cannot be reversed, and the solenoid assembly must be replaced. I've done a few dozen solenoid replacements... not the most difficult job, but a little involved.
I've also seen this happen not too long after the transmission was flushed at a shop that did not use motorcraft fluid. The formulation of the brand of "mercon V compatible fluid" they used had the same effect.
I would call the Mazda dealer with the VIN and see if there are any outstanding recalls.. if this one is still open you may be able to talk them into fixing it under the recall. If it had already been done, then you're SOL (however a lot of complaining MAY get you somewhere).
The solenoid pack will run you about $400 or so (remanufactured).
