I've got a question about my dad's pickup, he doesn't have internet, so I'm gonna try to help him. He's got a 1979 f250 2wd camper special, the one with the extended wheelbase. It has a 400/np435 with 4.10's in a dana 61 or 70, not sure. Anyhow, his speedometer doesn't work because the gear is worn and can't remember what gear it takes. He thinks it is the red or burgundy color one. Is there anybody out there that might be able to point us in the right direction on how to get the right one and the best place to get it?
A good Ford dealer should have replacement speedo drive gears. Sometimes colors are not significant. Take the old one with you. Count the teeth (even worn you should be able to count them) and match the rotation direction.
They are not expensive. But sometimes when the gear is chewed up it means that something else has a problem, like a bound drive cable to the speedometer or a bad gear on the ouput shaft in the transmission. Make sure you check them. Sometimes a new cable to the speedo and lube will be all it needs.
