checking ring and pinion
Howdy. I have a Ford 9" outta a 1972 F-100 that I am looking to install in a 54 F100. I am gonna put new bearings etc in it but how do I check and see if I need a new ring and pinion? DO I simply check the teeth? Check back lash? Anything else? Thanks.

Look at the teeth and look around inside the housing to see if any shavings are layin around. Check the backlash with the dial indicator. If the teeth are worn enough the backlash will be effected, check the bearings for wear also (drive pinion and differential) while its on a bench because it is alot easier overhauling a rear axle outside of the vehicle even though its a removeable carrier.
