I recently purchased a used 2006 Explorer with 12k miles (my third Explorer, still under warranty). While driving at all speeds I can hear a rattle noise in the area of the transmission. Noise increases with speed and stops when still. I took it to the dealer for repair. The first time they said it was the muffler & they replaced it. On the drive home noticed noise was exactly the same. Took it back and the second time they said it was the transfer case; eventually they replaced that. On the way home heard the same noise continuing, maybe a tiny bit quieter. Now he says that all '06 Explorers have the same noise/rattle. Is anyone with '06 having similar problems? Does your's rattle all the time?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
I'll bet Ford would be REAL interested to hear this service manager is bad-mouthing all '06 Explorers! If he has other '06s on the lot, make him prove it. I know it's a pain but keep after them, and escalate your problem to the next level if you ain't gettin' no satisfaction. This "Oh, that's normal" syndrome is one of the reasons Ford is in trouble right now.
Maybe a dumb question, but have you checked the heat shields? Also, does the rattle vary with the temperature of the truck? If so, it could be a cat converter baffle,
My '06 Explorer has a rattle/noise at about 20mph and sometimes at speeds slightly higher when I hit the gas. Could be a heat shield or some type of cover. Anyone else got an idea?
Do you have the V6 or V8? If you have the V6, you have the 5R55 tranny. At least in older model years these had torque converter problems- mainly noise. Is it vehicle speed related or engine speed related? This would be a crucial question to answer- if it's engine speed, I'm inclined to think it's somewhere in the tranny- vehicle speed- probably not the tranny.
It has the V6, and the noise seems to be vehicle speed related. Only happens at about 20 mph and if you let off on the gas and then hit the gas at other speeds. Sounds like something is loose and vibrating...........
