I have a 95 Ford explorer and I love my car but it just seems like one problem after the other. She has 124,000 miles on her and just had the trani replaced at 114,000. About a month ago a rattling noise started under the hood. It only does it when it is in Drive and stopped. It does not do it in neutral or park, period. about a week before the noise started we replace the idler pully and the belt tensioner because of a squeeling noise my car has been making. So then the night I noticed the noise I went to advance auto parts and one of the techs said it might the alternator brushes or something like that rattling around they also said that may be where the squealing is coming from also. So in conclusion of this novel we changed out the alternator and the car still rattles and it still squeals.
If the rattling started after you replaced the tensioner and idler, I'd start there. Take the belt off and spin all the pulleys and see if there is any noise/drag on them. I doubt if it's alternator brushes.
We looked at the pullies and belts last night and everything seems to be in order. I wish i could explain the rattling noise. sounds like plastic maybe.
