Alright, I got some OEM auto locking hubs for the winter to replace the warns. Started installing them on my 91 D60 HP axle. The auto hubs I got are from a 97 (ebay). I looked through my install manual (for 97's) and it shows that the thrust washers and snap ring assy go on the stub shaft BEFORE the auto hub locking body. With the manual hubs, the locking assy went on BEFORE and there was a groove at the tip of the stub shaft for the snap ring to go into. My question is, did ford make newer stub shafts with the groove for the snap ring at the base of the splines instead of the tip? And if they did, what years? Last thing, any idea if I will **** the assy up if I run w/o the snap ring and thrust washer assy?
Update: I ran a local mudhole and got stuck cuz the auto hubs would NOT engage. Any ideas? I was stoked to run auto hubs for good ole detroit winter.
Put warn hubs back on . They do assemble backwards or at least different . If all gose well I'm taking the new auto hubs off my 94 f150 old owner just had them put on at ford garage .So I'll try to get back to you. He paid 400.00+ for them installed . They snap pop and kick out under load . Just like 3 other trucks I 've had with them and 2 of those were bought new buy me. Ford replaced 2 sets and then talk them into manuals 200000+ miles latter still going strong. If the garage can't get it right ? Good luck

The whole point of putting the autos on was not having to get out of my truck in the winter. I am lazy. Since I run on the highway every morning and have 4.88 gears, I get hella front driveshaft noise when I leave the hubs locked in. If you get any pics of the newer hubs installed that would be greatly appreciated.
Did you get a new wheel nut with your hubs? The wheel nuts for the manual hubs are the same as the one for the older auto hubs (5 screws on the cap) but the newer auto hubs (3 screws on the cap) use a totally different style wheel nut. I have changed hubs on a heavy duty 3/4 ton axle and a light duty f-150 axle. However, it has been awhile.
I know most people recommend switching to manuals but so far I have had good luck with the autos in my F-150. If you don't abuse them they seem to hold up fine. The wear comes from the fact that there has to be movement to cause engagement. Once they engage they work fine. However, one time of partial engagement and going full throttle can completely destroy them.
They came with a new wheel bearing nut and that liitle half moon shaped lock ring that keeps the nut from backing off. The warns I took off had a wheel bearing nut, lock ring with a little nipple on it and another wheel bearing nut to clamp it all together. The main question I still have is that the Ford service manual (the same one the mechanics use) shows that the small snap ring that goes on the stub shaft goes on first, then the locking hub assembly. Since the groove for the snap ring is on the tip of my stub shaft, the locking hub assembly will not slide on over it (duh). So my question still remians, is there a stub shaft that has the small snap ring groove at the base of the splines instead of the tip?
