I just got a 1989 f350 2wd crewcab with a 460/auto for free, but in order to transfer the title I have to get a smog check. The check engine lite comes on usually after about 5 mins. of driving. it always goes off after turning off the engine and restarting, but comes back on after another 5 mins or so. the engine seems to run fine but could probably use a tuneup. I want to try to fix this before trying to smog it so I dont have to keep going back to the smog station, or worse- be labled a gross polluter! Anyone know how to read the code for what is wrong? I tried to search this forum, but for some reason I cant access the search function. This is the only gasser I own so Im not very familiar with how to diagnose problems(especially when there is no apparent problem other than the light being on.) Thanks in advance for any help -Scott
your repair manual, chiltons or haynes, usually has the list of codes in it. you can check it with any reader or even an obdII if you purchase the cable for the obdI.
ok-so I checked the codes and I have a oxygen sensor problem. Seems easy enough to replace except I cant find the d@mn thing! The manual says it is in the exhaust manifold and looks kinda like a sparkplug, but I cant find anything that even has any wires coming out of it in that vicinity. Am I completely blind, or is the oxygen sensor somewhere else? Thanks for any hints-Scott
I will replace it tomorrow. Autozone has one for $45 , so with the starter I replaced Im only into my "free" truck for less than $100. Cant complain about that! Thanks to everyone for the help-I couldnt have done it without you-Scott
