I have a 1999 Ford Explorer. The Anti-lock brake light has come on. It seems the only way to pull codes is with a STAR tester. Is that true or is there another methold which includes grounding a wire and counting pulses. If there is no other way to pull codes then with the tester what is the most probable cause. The rear differential sensor or one of the front sensors. Also with out the tester how would one clear the light.
I had the same problem on my 2000 explorer. I replaced the rear ABS sensor on top of the differencial , light went out by itself , the part only cost me about $18 at Checker Auto Part good luck

Connect a DMM to front sensor(left or right), set meter on milliVolts, rotate hub
and get reading. Should be approx. 40 to 160 milliVolts. if O.K., then check opposite front one. If O.K. then repace the rear one---it's very inexpensive compared with front sensors. The front(s) are a dealer only item and usually
cost over $100.
