It could be your GPR (glow plug relay) It is to the left of the fuel filter. Possibly test that first with a voltmeter if you have one. Others will chime in to give specifics.
Yes plenty of ways but easiest is to jump the terminals of the GPR. Do this with a screwdriver or other item and try to crank it then. If that does not give satisfaction, let us know. Also, the AIH heater relay makes a good emergency backup for the GPR. Just swap the wires and see if that helps.
Edit: I am talking about the big terminals. Just run the battery juice straight to the GPs.
thanks for the quick reply, was getting pretty frustrated. Since it is about 0 degrees now Ill try your check tomorrow. I guess that I will need to leave it unplugged to really know if it works?
Probably would be best to not plug it in, that way you can make sure that the GPR is causing the glow plugs to have slight resistance on them. If it wont start, then it is not.
Like Ten said, if it wont go in the morning, cross the large terminals on the GPR (brown in color) with a screwdriver for 15-20 seconds and try to crank it over. That would be the first step in troubleshooting to take and easiest
Is there white smoke when you are trying to start? If so, then that would be unburnt fuel.
If yuou have a test light it's pretty easy test, Just make sure both terminals are hot when you turn the key on w/ the motor cold. They should be hot for 1-2 minutes depending on how hot it is. Check w/ the key off and you can see which terminal goes to the battery, if theres no power on any termninal w/ the key off the wire to your battery is open. I'd leave the GPR jumped for longer than 20 seconds if you suspect it, maybe 45 but up to 120 sec is ok.
You can test your Glow Plugs @ the UVC plug, I believe the outside 4 terminals are the GP's. Check them for resistance to ground, should be around 1-2 ohms. Maybe you can check from the normally open contact of the GPR to ground, but that would only tell you if you have at least 1 good GP...
thanks for the reply. I just tried to check but the motor is not quite cold enough to be troubled as it is a balmy 16 F and it has been off for about 2 !/2 hour. It started right up. So Ill let it cool off for another hour before I try again. Will try the resistance test Sat in a warm shop!
Had terrible white smoke on start up, and ran real rough after it turned over. Got a new GPR last week at IH for 28 bucks, and I am as good as new. For 25-30 bucks............when in doubt, change it out!
checked again at 10PM and it is down around zero degrees now so she did nt want to start. tried the jump across the gpr for 25 secs and she fired without white smoke! where do I find the gpr my local shucks wanted almost 50 bucks? I know I'm in ak but give a guy a break!
If I recall, the international dealer was cheaper for the right part (~$30?)
But go to NAPA and buy a GPR109. I think thats the #... it's 1 lower than what is supposed to be on our trucks (GPR110?). I believe it's the previous body style relay and works fine except it's indexed 90 degrees out. You just have to stretch the wires a bit to hook it up and save 1/2 the cost. I found out the day after I bought the $50 one...
