Toyota Power Steering Conversion

Hello DS,

I have a 59 that I am currently working on and noticed that you installed ps on your 59. How hard was it, how long did it take you? I would like to know what parts I need if you can help me with that. I can get the whole ps steering unit with the steering colum from a bone yard for about 200.00. What type of steering colum did you use? Any body else with sugestions or tips or pics and knowledge of the install would be of great help. I dont want to go to a mustang II front end. Kind of on a budget.

Thanks,

Rich

Toyota power steering conversion

[FONT="Arial Black"]I have a 1955 f-100 and I would like to use the Toyota Power steering conversion.

Problem is I have the original 223 straight Six so I have power steering pump bracket problems. I have converted to 12 volts so I have a alternator which hangs on the driver side of the engine leaving very little room for the pump.
Where and how do I hang the pump?

Next problem is I have the original 3 speed trans. with the column shift (3 on the tree) which I want to retain. Is there enough room to install the Toyota steering box and attach to the stock steering column and retain the stock 3 speed linkage?

Has anyone done this conversion on a six cylinder, column shift truck?

This is a pretty old thread (2002) ...there is some more recent discussion on this on another thread on FTE that may give you some ideas:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...n-a-223-a.html

As far as the box, it is not much different in width to the stock box so you should be able to use your column shift.

No, the pressure side of the box s a 16mm inverted flare fitting, a size commonly used even on US late model steering pumps for both lines. The return fitting on the Toy box is the mongrel 17mm fitting, so be sure to get that fitting as well as the short metal tube with it. The return hose is under much lower pressure so a plain rubber PS hose can be used to joint the box and pomp fittings, just clamp with hose clamps. Mid Fifty sells a pressure hose with the proper 16mm fitting ant both ends and adapter fittings should your pump require a different fitting.Be sure to use a pump from a non rack and pinion vehicle (too low pressure) but not from a mega land barge (Caddy, etc) that are too high pressure. The common Saginaw teardrop shaped pump uses 16 mm fittings on both lines.

PSC Motorsports sells the fittings for the Toy Box. AN6 They refer to them specifically as being for the Toyota. I got the pair (16 & 17mm). They were $6.90 each.

Eman, that's a great find! I had header clearance issues with my return line, so I bought a braided SS power steering hose kit from GottaShow Gotta Show Products Home Page Featuring Hot Rod Plumbing that included their own banjo style extra low profile fittings in the 16 and 17mm size. They do not offer the fittings separately tho. MF also offers a rubber hose kit with an adapter: 17mm to AN6 threads, but even the adapter plus a 90* AN6 was too tall for my application.

Yeah, I had header clearance problems too. I ended up going with Corvette Rams Horns.

I work in the Off-Road Racing industry. Turns out Toy Power boxes are popular with the those guys. I learned about this source from one of their forums.

The headers on my CSB would have cleared your setup (very similar to the MF adapter except theirs was plain steel), but the return line would have been closer than I would have liked. Since I am going to be doing long distance towing with my Panel I wanted to keep the fluid as cool as possible. The GottaShow banjo fittings give me nearly 2" of clearance and the SS braid hoses should help keep the fluid cool.
