or did someone just slap some old steel on a newer bus? Check out the pipes and spoiler! I managed to get a couple weeks leave to go back home, went to one of my favorite hangouts, and this was in the parking lot. I thought you folks would enjoy the pics.
Sorry about the bottom of the 2nd pic; not sure what happened there...
Looks like a real bus to me. Rear fenders look like a non-factory addition. From what I remember, Ford offered two or three different platforms for the school bus body. The wheelbase was the difference. I have the info in one of my literatures.
There was a similar bus, but a 51 or 52, that sold on eBay a few months ago for $2 or 3k. It was converted to a camper along the way.
I'd love to get the short bus version. It's a lot easier to maneuver and takes up less room when parking.
I could have bought a nice little stubby bus a few years back at a swapmeet. The guy had a hand written sigh with $1200 crossed out and $1000 written under it. I think I could have gotten it cheaper but I knew my wife would kill me if I dragged it home. I still would like to find one, my wife is a school bus driver and I could fix it up for here to drive to work.
It would take a lot of work to graft the Cadillac front end on that 51. I wonder if he filled in the Ford name on the hood emblem since the Cadillac symbol is still on the grill.
In the area I grew up the first school bus was in '54 so I can't find any old Ford school bus's. I've seen a bunch of 60's Chevy's.
I know where a fifty-two bus is sitting in a junkyard not far from my house. Last time I checked though it had gotten really close to this tree that was growing alongside it.
There was a really cool '56 Ford school bus in Fallon, NV about 6 months ago, parked/abandoned behind a building downtown, not too far from the Birdfarm casino if anybody is familiar. Looked to be in good shape, and probably spent it's middle age as a hippie bus. I've seen it in the same place over the past couple years, so it's probably still there.
