Charging system indicator (voltmeter) dead
Can anyone enlighten me as to where the charging system indicator (voltmeter) in the instrument cluster gets its power? The truck is a 1990 f-250 with the 460. Several weeks ago the meter stopped working suddenly, pegged at zero. I checked the fuse panel but saw no fuse description that pointed specifically to the voltmeter, all the other instruments worked OK. At the time I had no tools with me to disconnect the battery to check the status of the alternator, but since the headlights brightened when I revved the motor I concluded the alternator is OK. The next morning the indicator began to work properly again. That was several weeks ago and now again the meter stopped working. Can anyone tell me where this gauge receives its source of power? Is it a dedicated line from some critical point in the charging system or is it just any hot tap from the downstream side on the ignition switch. Is it fused? I don’t have a wiring diagram.
