Water Seperator Question

I'm new to diesels so I have a couple questions on the water seperator. I have an 04' 6.0L.. when do you "drain" the water seperator, and what is the correct proceedure? Is it just by opening the valve that is on the frame mounted fuel filter? Sorry for my newbie question....

Thanks,
-=Rick

Anytime the water in the fuel light comes on. I drain mine every engine oil change, it really does not matter on intervals, more is a good thing to remove any build up which can corrode the sensor. Use a 6mm hex drive to remove the plug. The original hex fitting on your 04 may strip out and can be replaced with an updated plug once removed.

I drain mine once a month. Minimizes water corrosion and the plug stays easy to remove. Procedure I use is to grab some rags and my customized 32 oz Powerade bottle that has the mouth trimmed so it fits perfectly under the HFCM drain plug. Then I crawl under the truck, loosen plug until it starts to ooze fuel, put the bottle under it, then remove plug the rest of the way. I let it drain until it stops, which is usually about a third of the bottle and 20 or 30 seconds later, put the plug back in and tighten until it just stops turning, and wipe off any residue. No muss, no fuss.

Here's one. The plug is the brass colored thing just above that white paper tag.

Arrow One more thing . . .

Also you need to recycle the fuel pump before starting as well.

Proceedure is to turn the key on for 10 sec. Turn off, Turn on again for 10 sec., turn off. Start up truck normally
