My truck has 7700 miles on it and I have never seen a message that tells me there is water in the fuel. The manual says to open the water seperator once a month but I'm a little hesitant to do that if its not needed. Anyone have any advice? I'm new to this diesel thing and I don't want to create a problem.
DO IT! You cannot afford to not drain the water, it will kill the injection pump and injectors if your filters fill with water and allow water to get past them. Draining the water trap is easy, and be sure to turn on the key for 10 seconds or so before trying to start the truck after draining.
Same thing here. Did a check at 7000 miles and nothing but pure ULSD! I try to always buy at my local TA truck stop/BP. Fresh fuel on a daily bassis. By the way, diesel is $3.03!!! (and dropping)
I bought my truck slightly used w no owners manual and have no idea where this drain is? I have about 13000 miles on the truck and it has never been done. $2.89 per gal phx az
If I recall correctly, it is right under your azz on the inside of the main frame rail. All you need is a plastic cup but I use a clear container so I can see what I am doing.

Where are you located the cheapest I have seen is 3.29 in WA
I have 8000 miles on my 6.4 and i have tried to drain several times but i get only a few drops of fuel, no water. The drops come very slowly. Should there be a steady stream of fluid from the filter?

Should be a steady stream, are you opening the valve all the way?
$3.45 in Montgomery, AL. I wish it was under $3/gal here. I will be taking our truck back to the dealer for the Drain Fuel/Water Separator message. Dealer said last week that nothing was wrong, but I can't drive more than 7 miles before the message comes back on. I have drained mine several times. Dealer supposedly checked the sensor, and our fuel and said nothing was wrong. I'll be looking at changing the fuel filter.
