Sounds like some of the gears in the speedometer head are not working. Either jammed, broken or worn out. Try to find a shop that can repair them in your area. If no one can, then you might need to get one from a wrecking yard and replace it. If it's an electronic display then you'll need a shop for sure. A Ford dealer or the local police station may have some suggestions for a shop.
Yep. The gears in the later speedometers go bad. You can replace with a junkyard one, but unless it has better replacement gears in it, you will have the same result in the end.
The Mustangs have this issue bad around the mid 90s as well.
I just noticed on a road trip last week that my odometer (regular and the trip odometer) had locked up (96 Explorer Sport). Like yours, the speedometer continues to work fine. The odometer will occasionally free up but seems to lock up again after less than 50 miles. This helps explain why I haven't been able to rack up 3000 miles on the odometer since the last oil change in May .
Anyhow, just curious if you been able to get yours replaced and curious as to what the cost was for a new/used instrument cluster? If you din't repalce, Have you done anything and what??
