In the case on my truck (97 mountaineer) it was the rear spring on the driver's side that basically wore out after many many miles (170k). Both the gas tank and the driver are on that side of the vehicle.

Are we talking back or front?

The torsion bars only deal with the front. You adjust the left bolt for the left side, right for the right. Tightening the bolt raises the vehicle on that side, loosening it lowers it.

The torsion bar runs from the front suspension towards the rear. You will notice a bar that comes back and ends somewhere about the front doors (under the vehicle of course). At the end of the bars, you will notice a box end with a bolt in the center of it - usually around a 9/16" or 13mm. This is the torsion bolt you are looking for.

Cobra, I think I recall reading here that if you mess with the torsion bar you are also messing with your front end alignment so you need to get that done after you change that?

thanks,

That is correct. Anytime you change something dealing with the suspension and its stance, you should have it aligned. Raising or lowering will change your toe, etc, so it has to be aligned and fixed.
