I put a new battery and cable ends in the truck tonight, but had trouble starting it.
So....I opened the hood to see if it was getting fuel, and noticed a "HOT" smell. I poked around a little further and noticed a small but steady stream of smoke coming up from the firewall. I immediately disconnected the battery, and started trying to remember where the fire extinguisher was.
-don't have one.
Fortunately, the smoke eventually started to die down, and I located the source.
There's a block on the passenger side of the firewall- it was so hot that I could feel the heat 2-3 inches away. There are two wire ends plugged into it (actually one wire that is interrupted). I unplugged the lower one that was so hot- the tab sticking out was super hot.
Anybody know what that thing is- and what it does??
That is the resistor that drops the voltage going to the coil. One of the terminals goes directly to the keyswitch. The other goes to the coil +.
I would follow the wire going to the coil, and check the coil out, and also the points and or module and wiring. If the coil has oil leaking out of it, I would replace it. If the points haven't been replaced in awhile, I would replace them and the condensor.
The trouble starting and the hot resistor are probably being caused by the same thing(something wrong with the ignition circuit).
Had a similar thing happen years ago. The points were "welded" shut on the 390, 66 Cyclone & the battery cables got smoking hot. Changed the points only & problem solved.
AL.
I hope that I've found the problem.
The hot wire to the coil is cracking away- really brittle-- there were only 2-3 strands left intact when I looked at it just now.
If this doesn't work, I'm going straight to the points.
