Glow plug relay smoking...

Question Glow plug relay smoking...

I have a '95 F250 with a 7.3 powerstroke in it. I just replaced my fuel pump (Located on top of the intake), and when I went to start it and check everything I noticed the wire on the glow plug relay, the heavy one that comes off the starter relay, was hot and smoking. The other end of it on the starter relay was not hot. I checked to make sure all wires was put back on the fuel filter ***'y correctly, and that there was no pinched wires. Anyone know whats going on here? All my connections are good and tight.

Welcome to

What type of set up do you have? Fuel pump (mechanical) is located down in the valley of the engine and not on top of of the intake. Did you replace the GPR also or is it the original?

Hey, yea, my fuel pump is in the valley like you said. I have not replaced the GPR, same one on it since I bought the truck in '95. The engine starts, and runs with no problem. The wait light goes off and everthing like normal, but while its running, I can see that one terminal start to smoke.

Do you have a volt meter/ohm meter or trouble light to troubleshoot. On the GPR one of the large wires goes to the starter relay as you indicated and is 12V all the time. The other two medium large wires goes to the glow plugs. They should only be (12V) during glow plug ON time, not WTS light time. With cold engine during summer months probably 20-30 seconds or so. One of the small wires on the GPR is 12V with key on. The other small wire goes to the PCM and is grounded by the PCM to activate the relay during glow plug on time. To start disconnect one of the small wires PPL/ORG and the GPR should not energize and that large wire should not get hot. If it does then something inside the relay is shorted to ground causing the relay to be on all the time with key ON.

Ok, I did take one of the small wires off, and the relay stayed cool. What else do I need to look at?
