Question Transmission Shifting Weird When Cold...

My Dad has a 1999 F-150 with a 4.6L V8 and an automatic transmission. He had the transmission fluid changed about 7 or so months ago. Recently, about the last month or so, he has been having problems.

First thing in the morning he goes to drive away and it shifts from 1 to 2 ok but the 2 to 3 shift doesn't happen unless he takes his foot off the gas and waits then it will shift. After about 5 or so minutes of driving it will not do it again until the next morning.

He said while driving around town it will OCCASIONALLY slip when driving. But, other then that everything is fine.

The fluid is up to proper level, does not smell burnt and is the right colour. When the fluid was changed the mechanic supposedly used Mercon V which is what the dipstick says.

So, any ideas?

Hey Matt have you noticed that little Recalls/TSBs button near the top of the page?
That can be your friend
Take a look at https://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/full...p?tsb=*99-18-5

Hmmm...interesting. This has only happened in the last month or so. So, is that just a TSB? I should maybe print that out and take it to the dealer?

Dealer already has a copy of it. You might mention it if you take it... just ask it it's applicable to your truck. That way, the dealer still makes the diagnosis and you aren't responsible for any mis-diagnosis, should any occur.

The tranny is going to have to be opened to repair. The question is whether it can be repaired by just pulling the valve body from the bottomor if the tranny needs to be pulled.

Hmmm...doesn't sound good.

Some more info for you guys I got from my Dad today. The transmission was flushed at *gasp* Jiffy Lube. They did a fluid transfer as well as the filter. I looked at the receipt he got for it and they used a Multi-Vehicle ATF. Said it was ok for Mercon V applications. I didn't like the sound of that. I have heard some bad things about that Multi-Vehicle stuff.

So, should I get it switched out with some straight Mercon V from Ford? Or is the damage already done?

Also, the date on the receipt was in January. So, it has been about 9 or 10 months.

The 2-3 accumulator can be replaced without pulling the transmission. You do have to remove the valve body though.
Chances are the oil that was used didn't cause any problems but I would refill it with Mercon V when I reaplced the accumulator.

Just a heads up. The fluid I bought for my f150 from the DEALER is also multi- grade ATF!!
