i need a list of all the likely spots to look for air intrusion. my truck after a 4 hour or better sit is a white smoke hard starting #@#@. i replaced the line that went from the filter to the injection pump, it was cracked. and it still is a hard starter, especailly when park with its nose up hill. i dont understand that part of it. thankyou matt
Injector return lines between plastic caps (8), and o-rings on the injectors, If you have not done all of them, and found one hard and cracked, the rest are overdue as well. LOL
I had problems starting my 84 IDI...I had air in the system, cut & plugged the return line from the filter to the #1 injector, fixed the air problem but still hard to start....just installed new glow plugs, starts with no problems at all....going to replace the #1 plastic T with a single outlet, same as #2 injector.
I will answer the last part first.
The reason it is harder to start when the front is uphill is because when the engine is higher and the tanks are lower, the vacuum created in the fuel lines is greater. So it will suck in more air faster.
If you park on a steep enough hill with the engine downhill it is possible for the rear tank to be level with the top of the engine, so no vacuum is created and it will start easy.
Now the bad part, your leak could be on a line under the truck anywhere between the IP and fuel tank. I wish I could point you right at it but I can not. Fuel line air leaks are the hardest things to find. It could be in either line, supply or return.
The only thing I can say to help is do a very close inspection of the metal fuel lines at every clamp and fitting from the tank selector valve to the engine. Rust buildup around a clamp may indicate the problem area. Also look for signs of fuel line movement that may have rubbed a hole in the line.
