Iwas looking to make some mud flaps on my 2005 SD on my 97 250 with the flat bottom step bumper I used electrictians beam clamps to hold mud flaps on when I would be towing. They were easy to take off the bottom flange of the bumper when not needed. My 2005 SD with tapered bumpers this old system will not work. I was looking at Enkay rock tamers from Cabela's and wondering if anybody has used this system for trailer towing flap system. To me with the adjustments that it has it looks like a good setup. I looked on line and Cabela's was the lowest price place that I have found for them looking for info.
I bought the Enkay last year to save my JetSki from getting tagged with rocks flying off the rear tires. This system is a quality system and easy to use. I had to grind away part of the weld on my receiver hitch in order for it to fit, other than that it is very easy to install.
An alternative I found better looking and of course perminate is the Power Flow Diamond Plate mud flaps. FYI see my Gallery for a pic. It is SWD though.
I have the factory mud flaps on mine as well but they are just too short. My rear quarter panels are pretty much sand blasted behind the rear wheels, although the Enkays are big and bulky and not the greatest looking thing, I know that no rocks are going to get past them. I think once I get my truck painted I am going to check into getting that 3m clear bra stuff put on the rocker panels.
I have the Enkays and am pleased with them but be aware that when backing and turning my travel trailer in a tight turn the steel rods will hit the front cap of the camper if turned real sharp. You can get out and take them off or adjust if necessary. My truck is a crew cab dually with a 35' trailer so that is a long combination. I also have the Husky mud flaps for a dually and have no rock chips on the quarters of my truck. If you have M&S tires and not all terrain tires this makes a big difference in how many rocks you pick up and throw with the tires.
I have the Ford mud flaps on the back that I installed using Ford's pattern to mount them. But towing a trailer they do not have good coverage of mud and water spray on your load. That is why I asked about the enkay system it sounds like a good way to go for better protection on the load you may be pulling. I did not whant to spend this much for this system if it was not a good set up. From the online info it did look to be a good set up. Any other comments about them will be helpfull.
I didn't want to spend that much money either. I had the trailer for my ski custom built and I'm really **** about taking care of my stuff. I didn't want the trailer or the ski to get rock chips which is why I bought them.
When you get them in the mail you will quickly see every part of the package is high quality. The rubber is very thick, make sure you have a sharp utility knife because you will more than likely have to trim a few inches of it off. My SD sits very high and I still cut about 4 inches off. The height you have the mud flaps is adjustable as well, there are 3 different height settings, so you can have them drag the road if you want.
I wasn't crazy about the "cosmetics" of the unit. I like the looks of my truck and a big ole honkin mud flap just doesn't look good. So I figured I would just take them off when I wasn't pulling the ski, but I pull the ski 2-3 times per month, the flaps are big and heavy and I really don't have a place to store them so I just keep them on full time.
