We have a good policy for sick days and vacation days, but people hardly ever take off just for being sick. Usually to go have fun or because they don't want to come in that day. Since it is a paid day their check isn't short. For me I will come in unless I'm running a fever, or having to run to the john.

I had 360 hrs of sick time built up the last place I worked, and that was with a couple weeks off with a hernia...

I took over a couple depts. at the new place and couldn't believe the mindset. People were afraid to take sick time and would schedule time with me to show Dr. notes and prescriptions for proof. They would try to lie about where they were going on vacation, (like going to Disneyland would get an approval sig, but just staying home for a few days wasn't a reason to take off), even when they were due the time off.

I made big changes by moving from an authoritarian style to a participative leadership style. Everyone got more responsibility and at the same time ownership. Seems to work, my depts have 1.03 hrs OT total for the year, (#1), while the other 100 and some depts average 15hrsOT/month. It's funny, people that have fun at work and are listened to don't get sick much and productivity goes up. You want to take off? Figure out how and keep me in the loop. I'm lucky there isn't high turnover and can use participative.

Where I work there are no sick days, and harsh treatment if you do call in sick. Several years ago, I worked w/ the flu, which wound up being a severe sinus infection. It took over a year to finally knock that infection out. Of course, I had to work the whole time. I'm still looking for a better job, every week.
