hey.. i have a 2000 EB with a 5.4... i just did an oil change and i swore it needed 5w30... well i was wrong it needed 5w20.. should i change it to 5w20 or will i be good for the 3000 miles on 5w30??? thanks dave.. PS this truck takes 6 qrts of oil correct??
Not a problem. Book calls for 5w20, but 10w30 or 5w30 weight won't cause a problem. The first number represents the actual "weight" of the oil. The second numbers tells you the weight at operating temp. The oil needs to be thin for cold starts but also needs to have thick characteristics at operating temps. Seems counterintuitive because we expect liquids to thin with mixing and heat.
I own a 2000 EB and it takes 5w-30. The 2000 F250 w/V10 I used to have took the same. I was told Ford changed to 5w-20 in 2001 but I don't have any documentation of that.
""The first number represents the actual "weight" of the oil. The second numbers tells you the weight at operating temp.""
Actually the first number is the "winter" grade and corolates to cold temp pumpability
kinda like the 5w part acts like a 5 wt oil when cold the "hot" end number like the 30 is the "grade" hot at 100C. So a 5w/30 Kinda pours like a 5wt when cold yet STAYS as thick as a 30wt when hot.

Ford TSB 02-1-9 back-spec'ed 5W-20 for use in ALL Expedition motors back to model year 1997, along with a bunch of other motors dating back even further than that.

Not all motors, but the list covers most of them, I just looked at that TSB. I guess I'm wondering now why every time I brought it into the dealer to have the fluid changed after 2002, that they put in 5-30. At 71k miles, will it really improve the mileage that much or protect the engine that much more from here on out?
I changed by 2004 to 5W-20 at 50K and noticed a 1 mpg increase in gas mileage. I swear I made no other changes to tire pressure, fuel, air filter, or anything else. Pretty weird if you ask me.
2003/5.4 - yep 5w-20 and 6 qts with the filter change. Also Walmart usually does have the best price. They also sell the oil in 5qt.(Yeah (5) Qt.) jugs. The only good thing is the jug has a clear line so you can get close on that last qt. Let me know if anyone finds better prices on MotorCraft parts!
Thanks!
My manual for a 98 4.6 says 5/30. I have run that exclusively and not had a problem. Just curious if anyone knows if there was a difference spec for the 5.4 vs the 4.6. back then. Thanks
