Diesel stutter

1999 f250 under light loads I get a what i call a stutter and it will shake the whole truck, Like it's not getting fuel to all the cylinders and or injector(s) is not firing off. Or maybe an injector pump starting to fail. the truck has about 177,000 miles on it. And I haven't found anybody in my area thats qualified. Iv'e been to my local dealership a couple times for other problems and they can't even get the little things fixed right let alone the let them try to get this.

These engines don't have an injector pump, so that should eliminate at least one thing to try and fix.

Does your truck illuminate the check engine light? I'm sure there's probably some code. Off hand I would think that either fuel pressure is dropping, injector oil pressure too low, or UVC harness has grounded out a bank of injectors.

See if you can find a way to retrieve codes stored and post them here. Most shops should be able to get that info.

I don't know much about the powerstrokes, but just one easy question/idea to help narrow this down.

in neutral/park slowly rev the engine up to 2,500 or 3,000 or whatever your cruising speed is.... hold it there and see if it has the shudder/shake. If so I'd guess air intrusion. If not, I'd be looking more at the trans/driveshaft.

When did you last change the fuel filter? If more than 10-15 K then change. These engines don't like even a parcelly plugged filter as it reduces fuel pressure to the engine.

If its a 5.4 It will be a coil pack. Ours When shifted into overdrive shook really bad. We thought it was the trans. Also if you look at the guages as stated above that the check engine light will come on, Ours flashed the ABS lights and The guages would shut off and turn back on. Just a simple coil pack and spark plug. Also the motor will go really good untill a higher gear or overdrive would kick in then the shuttering would acure. Hopefully this helps.

my 1999 F350 7.3 PSD has a similar stutter or cough but only when it rains, or sometimes when using the windshield squirters. The engine light comes on also. I've tried to locate the short by using a garden hose but cannot recreate the cough. I've put a silicone bead between the PCM and its socket but the problem still persists.
Any ideas
