Recently put new plugs, wires, and distributer cap on my 1990 302. I also had the injectors cleaned and the timing ajusted by a very good shop. At the same time took the catalytic converters off as well as the muffler and ran a straight pipe in the stock location. Finally, we also checked the fuel pressure up to about 5000 rpm.
On to the problem, while accelerating I used to get a stutter like detonation or just a misfire, but that is gone now at the lower speeds. But this still happens when I'm traveling at about 60 and accelerating while in overdrive.
I don't think that it is the transmission because it was just rebuilt less than 6 months ago.
Can anybody tell me what the problem is and how to fix it?
Thanks.
Almost sounds like pinging. Are you sure about the timing on the vehicle ? Pinging USUALLY is more noticible in OD or under a load than in basic acceleration. Also, if you replaced plug wires, make sure that wires #7 & #8 are not crossing because Ford says that this can cause problems. They even offer a TSB on it.
Thanks for the 7-8 tip. but does pininging cause the whole vehical to shutter so bad that stuff falls off the dash? Even if I am in 3rd going the same speed it does it but only faster because the rpm's are up.
first off what is your timing set at. also could this be problem with your front end like worn tierod ends or wheels not balanced properly. I would still check your tranny fluid make sure its full and doesnt smell rotten or burnt. have you serviced the tranny since the rebuild?
