Cool Clinking Noise

Hey.
I got a very weird clicking noise on my BII. It is not extremely loud and only shows up in the range of speed from 10 to 20 mph. I actually thought that this were valves but then once I didn't have the car on and the noise was there. So, basically if I send it down the hill, it goes quite till about 5mph, then noise starts coming out and at around 15mph the noise is pretty loud, at around 25mph it disappears. It looks like when you put load on the system(like starting the car by dropping a clutch in gear while it is rolling) makes noise go away. All this was performed on the TURNED OFF car. Also, the same noise comes up when going in reverse especially if one wheel is slippin(in a mud or something). I have nor probelms with trans at all(all gears shift nicely). I did a search, but all people had probelms UNDER the load...with me it looks opposite.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Klim

Another thing, it got 5 speed MT. I tried it with hubs locked and unlocked-no difference. 4 high or 2 high - no difference still clinking. I think I have a double cardan type shaft. Definitly not CV, and it has a rubber boot near the rear axle. Ill try puttin the car in 4 low and then try rolling it and see what happens. Also, I think the transfer Case is 13-50, but I am not sure.

Thanks again,

klim

Have you checked the u-joints for play? I've heard a rear u-joint act the way you describe, it's an easy check, lets rule that out first.

Grab the driveshaft with one hand and the yoke in the diff. with the other hand and twist. If there's slop, you'll see it &/or hear it.

Thanks! Ill try checking it today!
I started getting weird kind of vibrations lately..at all kinds of different speeds. Could it be connected?

Thanks,

Klim

A u-joint will cause vibrations, so it could be connected. A side note to Dealford's post, make sure you're in neutral when you check the u-joints, if there is pressure you won't be able to get any "slop" out of the joint. You may also have one that's locked, so you might want to jack the rear up and turn the shaft, and feel for any bind from either joint.

Oh, thanks about the neutral comment. I just went and checked at there was no slip at all... Ill go check again with trans in neutral.
I found HUGE slip in front though, my left and right driveshafts in front axle are defintly shot(i can turn the front drivashaft like 1/3 revolution)! Will have to fix that sometime. Also, the transfer case is really close to the skid plate(i can't see it but maybe it is even touching it) Is it supposed to be that way? Could the transfer case knock on the skid plate? Is transfer case attached to the frame or only to trans?

Thanks,

Klim.

Allright, just checked with the truck in neutral(and I moved it a little and it stopped just becouse the ground was level so I doubt that it was locked). If I try rotating the driveshaft there is totaly no play. However, if with one hand I hold it at the transfer case flange and with another try moving it up-down or left-right at the double joint I can move it like 3mm every way. This doesn't happen at the axle side. Is that normal play?

Thanks,

Klim

After driving today, I checked the U joints for temperature and the double cardan one(tranfer case side) was hotter then the rest of the drivashaft. But muffler was right next to it...

Does that help?

Thanks,

Klim

I'm far from an expert on how that joint should function, so I'm not saying much, I don't want to lead you astray, my driveline experience is with Universal style joints. I doubt the movement you describe is excessive, but I'm not sure. I guess I would assume since that joint has internal spring pressure it would create the noise whether load is applied or not. Beyond this piont, I'm a bit stumped, I had a deceleration noise similar to what you describe in an '84 BII I had years ago, but I sold the truck before I ever tracked it down. I'll deferr to others more knowledgable about transmissions ETC from here.

Hey! I narrowed it down! I don't know how I dind't think of it earlier. I put transfer case in neutral and then went down the hil with the truck turned off. The noise was there, but nothing in the transmission supposed to be moving, right? Therefore, it is not the trans~
I have a question, if the transfer case is in neautral, is the chain moving or not? If it is not, then we narrowed it down to driveshaft or axle!
Could it be bearings in the rear axle?

Thanks a lot,

Klim
